Cross Country Road Trip
I am about to embark on a cross-country road trip from NYC all the way to Berkeley, CA (more specifically – El CErrito, CA which is essentially just north of Oakland, CA). What follows below are my scratch notes for the trip – the thoughts I had about potential routes, literary road trips of note, and helpful links to sites that discuss other people’s cross-country drives and the like.
To Rent or not to Rent:
Renting a car to drive one-way across the country is probably the most expensive item on the list. Something like $1,600 roughly for a one-way rental from Miami to LA. But, you don’t have to go that route (bahaha). There are a number of services where you can math yourself up with someone who wants their car out in a different location but doesn’t want to pay for it to be shipped on the back of a truck. For example, AutoDriveaway is a company that matches drivers up with cars fro driveaways. Some restrictions apply – age, clean driving record, security deposits requirements or the like in some cases.
In other cases, you may know someone who is a friend or someone you work with who is relocating and wants their car on the other coast. In my case, I got lucky and this is what happened. My friend and co-worker and his family are relocating to CA for a post-doctoral fellowship and need their car out there with them. Even better, as their car is a Prius – it will be more environmentally responsible when driving than a typical fuel-injection engine. This will be my first time driving a Toyota Prius Hybrid, so I’m pretty excited to see how it handles and feel the engine switch gears.
Some background on the Prius:
Toyota Prius – this links to their company’s website section on the Prius C Hybrid.
For a Miami-to-LA trip, you’re probably looking at over $500: 2,800 miles, assuming 20 mpg and $3.75/gallon.
Below are some potential routes that I’ve been considering. Currently, it looks like the section of the trip from New Mexico to CA is pretty much set. I’d pick up Kate in Albuquerque, New Mexico then from there we’d check out Sandia Peak (and/or Red Rocks In Sedona, AZ), the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, the Death Valley, Yosemite and then on into the Oakland, CA area to deliver the car.
