Soup & Tacos

There’s a place called Soup & Tacos in Fredericksburg, VA that I go to from time to time when I’m in town. The first I heard of it was a couple of years ago when a friend of mine from high school was living practically catty-corner to the restaurant and she ran over there for some quick (& cheap) dinner. Their tacos used to be pretty inexpensive yet still incredibly good…. homemade chips still warm with a generous portion of guacamole helped further their popularity too. They also display a rotating selection of art on their walls (which in F’bg. is remarkable).

So when I was in Fred’bg. back in November, I stopped by Soup & Taco with my mom. Here she is enjoying a taco salad (its been a little while but I think that’s what she had):

Looks delicious right? And it is. Really delicious.

Unfortunately, though, this time there was a surprise… a glitch in the system… they had raised their prices! Soup & Taco was now teetering toward expensive.

Here’s a shot of my two chicken tacos order to raise your cash strapped spirits:

And I guess, coming from New York, none of this seemed at all outrageous. But in the context of downtown F’bg.: definitely.

You see, about 5-7 years ago, a developer started buying up farms and lots out just over the county border into Spotsylvania. The areas of land were across from the Spotsylvania Mall…where generations of movie goers left their gum stuck beneath the seats… This developer then proceeded to make basically an epicenter of chain store capitalism -which, I admit to frequenting – but one that has had the whole town worried that it would eclipse the downtown and make it non-economically viable.

My theory, is that the raising of the Soup & Tacos prices, are in response to the outside pressure that the Spotsylvania epicenter exerts. …that and that the city council persists with some rather stringent regulations regarding occupancy numbers.  All of us New Yorkers have seen how many people can really squeeze into a bar on a Saturday night and not violate any NY codes… what’s up with Virginia?

Perhaps its just backwards:
