Sometimes some of the best meals you have are not the ones at the fanciest restaurants….or at a restaurant at all for that matter….but the ones outside in the wilderness. This past weekend, Aimee and I went to Virginia for the annual Riverfest crab cookout event. Functioning as a fundraising meal, Riverfest proceeds go to help clean up and keep clean the Rappahanock River in Fredericksburg, VA.
The morning and early afternoon before the event provided a window for us to escape to the Island…Aimee’s first time.
Here’s the view from the log we “pulled up”:

Einstein Brothers Bagels is a Lakewood, CO based bagel & sandwich joint that operates out of a small building across from the University of Mary Washington in F’burg. The transition was amusing…..NYC where all the orders at say… Lenny’s Bagels where I go for lunch frequently… are taken in an assembly line fashion, quick, efficient…no repeating. To Viriginia where no only did the order taker appear to have just stepped out of the fields, but we each had to repeat our order specificying multiple times our preference for mayo, tom., lettuce, pickle etc…..but he also forgot what price the sandwich was to tell the cashier. Amusing. The slow pace is nice.
Squished in here is my sandwich which after a good 2-3 hours of hiking, rockhopping and general Huck Finn-ery-schnanegans was remarkably tasty!:

I got the ham and swiss with let., tom., and mayo on a plain toasted bagel (above). Here’s Aimee modeling her roast turkey and swiss natch… peanut butter and jelly on artisan wheat. Energized by her first few bites, Aimee dashed off and joined the Army – Ranger division…hence her sporting the new fatigue hat:

Even the locals couldn’t help but join in on or revelry:

Ya got a little something on your cheek there my Chelonian friend. This box turtle….. previously known as Boxy II, who now goes by her rap persona name of B2… was found smack in the middle of the hiking pathway chowing down joyously on a feast of sun warmed mushroom. Here’s B2’s snack:

Here’s a big, venerable tree on the island. I’m always amazed at how large the trees get there. Its really a thriving forest at some of the inside points…..I guess 87 acres will do that if left uninhabited:

Hey, nice post – love the Huck Finn reference. But that roast turkey and swiss on artisan wheat you mention tasted an awful lot like pb & j on a wheat bagel…
